How To Spot an English Major

The English major is a very unique species of college student, often seen as “nerdy” by other majors. Our habitats usually include libraries, nature, or Starbucks (or pretty much anywhere with coffee). Similar species are the literature major, the writing major, the journalism major, and the film major.

Other characteristics to aid you in spotting this delicate creature:

-We get very excited over new stationery, pens, and notebooks (especially Moleskines). An adverse effect takes place in the presence of split infinitives, misplaced apostrophes, and the word “irregardless.”

-We have a set system of organized chaos, which is deeply personal.

-We’re a bit OCD when it comes to our writing processes.

-Some of us like alcohol (a little too much).

-We’re very introspective and solitary creatures, not often seen in herds but rather alone or in very small groups.

-We are always armed with note-taking equipment.

-We often speak in British accents or Shakespearean dialect.

-We seem arrogant sometimes, but we’re usually insecure. (We’re the best communicators on paper, but can be highly awkward in person.)

-We’re not lazy, we’re just…idea-based.

-We have a high sense of quality in our literature, our belongings, and the people we’re around. We only like the best.
